It is only through the intervention of Horton that these people are potentially saved from extinction or genocide. Purely by random chance while in the jungle bathing one day, Horton discovers a civilization of previous unknown creatures so small their entire populous city can fit on a speck of dust. ![]() ![]() Little did anyone realize that that bizarre experience would only be a warm-up for an even more unlikely occurrence later on. Horton is a mild-mannered, incredibly kind, helpful elephant who became famous for taking over the job of sitting on an egg abandoned by a mother bird and staying there until it hatched into a strange bird/elephant hybrid creature. ![]() We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. People gravitate towards them because they seemingly offer a grander, more fulfilling experience for the few dollars invested into them, but I find this assumption to be often wrong. Jesus said, “…unless you…become as little children…” ( Matthew 18:3). That is not believing God– it is only believing our belief about Him. ![]() When we become simply a promoter or a defender of a particular belief, something within us dies. As soon as we abandon ourselves to God and do the task He has placed closest to us, He begins to fill our lives with surprises. We are uncertain of the next step, but we are certain of God. This is generally expressed with a sigh of sadness, but it should be an expression of breathless expectation. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, not knowing what tomorrow may bring. ![]() Our common sense says, “Well, what if I were in that circumstance?” We cannot presume to see ourselves in any circumstance in which we have never been.Ĭertainty is the mark of the commonsense life– gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life. ![]() The nature of the spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty. ![]() We think that we must reach some predetermined goal, but that is not the nature of the spiritual life. Alessio has had it with the games, he is going to get Ayla back and he doesn’t care who has to die in the process. Everyone knows not to mess with the pakhan and his woman but yet people still do. Yet, bizarrely, however much things improve from the way they were before, people still cling to the belief that the future will be nothing but disastrous. The availability of almost everything a person could want or need has been going erratically upwards for 10,000 years and has rapidly accelerated over the last 200 years: calories vitamins clean water machines privacy the means to travel faster than we can run, and the ability to communicate over longer distances than we can shout. Matt Ridley, acclaimed author of the classics Genome and Nature via Nurture, turns from investigating human nature to investigating human progress. ![]() |
