The stigma surrounding mental health is slowly disappearing in today’s media and overall conversation, but there is still so much work to be done. This safe haven opens Sam’s eyes to a new realm of possibilities when it comes to friendships and love – and also makes her question if her illness is really something to run from. Sam soon finds solace in a new world existing in plain sight: Poet’s Corner, a secret club that meets during lunch where students bare their souls through poetry and songwriting. One day, she meets someone new who changes everything: Caroline, a loner who seems to understand her much more than her clique of “friends” ever did. However, she chooses to hide that part of herself from nearly everyone else in her life and strives for normalcy amongst her peers. Thankfully, she has a solid support system at home and is able to get the help that she needs through medication and therapy. We are introduced to the character of Sam, a high school girl who, we come to realize early on, struggles with severe OCD and intrusive thoughts. This novel was a punch in the gut and a warm hug all at once – and I simply could not stop reading. But I could not stay silent once I finished my last read: Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. Hello my beautiful nerds! Yes I have been MIA and I sincerely apologize.
